A personal observation from Roger H Evans………

Whilst 5DL is a culmination of my lifes work so far, it owes much to a period of ten years research that I and close colleagues at CLC were privileged to undertake from 1997-2007 for the leaders of global companies across many sectors and who we are proud to have as our clients. In my book 5DL I have tried to write in such a way that it will be accessible to the many leaders and aspiring leaders who want to be the very best they can be, conduct themselves with integrity and transparency and want to create and build organisations that will last, will be fine places to work, and be characterised by fine and outstanding human leadership.

Whilst the book is academically anchored and well received I did not want it to be an academic tome because 5DL is more than just another Leadership textbook to clutter the corporate bookcase. It is a way for leaders to lead their businesses and should be accessible to all types of leaders across the globe;- from the private, public and voluntary sectors; for business leaders, political leaders, teachers and the military; and I would suggest there are considerable learnings for us in our private lives too.

So to the why and the Context for 5DL - In terms of business and political leadership I see that we stand at the epicentre of a storming global criticism of leadership. Two important dimensions characterise this criticism:-

  1. Greed and gross dishonesty - from Enron through the financial meltdown of 2008 and now the severe challenge to the morality of banks and large corporations, and the castigation of what many call the heroic leader.
  2. Todays vehement challenge to both management and business education directed specifically towards MBA programmes and the Business School system - and to management and leadership education within organisations, despite significant evolution in this area over the past 50 years.

it is easy to blame and make everything wrong but that misses the point, because so much has been achieved over the past 50 years. Rather than believe we now have to throw away the past, we need instead to consider what is happening to the whole genre of leadership and management.

To put it succinctly, leaders and leadership face what I would call, a full blown Existential Crisis.

By this term I mean a moment when an individual or group questions the very foundations of their lives or what they are doing;-  do they have any meaning, purpose or value? These moments (crises) often represent critical (key) turning points in peoples lives, for example in adolescence or in mid life when we ask deeply is there another level of meaning or purpose trying to emerge from what we are doing. 

For leaders and for leadership this means shifting context and asking what is the essence or the heart of leadership beyond the forms and skills and competencies that for the most part currently characterise our understanding of leadership during this early part of the 21st century?

5DL answers that question by introducing a new way of thinking about leadership. It introduces discrete human dimensions that characterise all the leaders CLC consultants have worked with over the past 20 years and which go to the very heart of leadership.

What we have seen repeatedly is that when a small number of underlying human dimensions are developed to a significant level and when they come together in an individual, remarkable and great human leadership can take place. The critical part of this statement is when they come together. It is not the same when one or two are present. All five dimensions need to be present to ensure the transformation of the individual into a high quality leader.

These leaders are characterised by a vision of the future based upon sustainability and values. They have a deep understanding of themselves and of the people around them. They have compassion and humility, are innately strong and have the ability to repeatedly deliver and make things happen by bringing people with them. It sounds like an impossible dream, but it isnt. It really works. Radical yes - but then 5DL goes to the essence of fine leadership.
